Chinese regulators slapped Alibaba on the wrist with a $2.8 billion fine in its latest anti-monopoly investigation.
After opening a probe into the tech giant’s monopolistic practices last December, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) said the policy suffocates competition in China’s online retail market and “infringes on the businesses of merchants on the platforms and the legitimate rights and interests of consumers,”.
On top of the fine, Alibaba is required to file self-examination and compliance reports to the SAMR for three years.
Alibaba would not have achieved our growth without sound government regulation and service, and the critical oversight, tolerance and support from all of our constituencies have been crucial to our development.
