The Weekend Rip: Is Big Cap Tech Back?

Tale of the Tape

Good evening, everyone. Welcome back to another week on Wall Street.

Big cap tech broke out last week. Perhaps big cap tech back? 🤷‍♂️

We’ll see earnings from heavy hitters like AMD and Microsoft on Tuesday. Apple, Facebook, and Tesla are all scheduled to report on Wednesday. See the earnings calendar below.

The Fed will meet later this week. It feels unlikely that rates will change but time will tell.

President Biden is expected to debut his “Buy American” plan on Monday. Will the markets make a major move in response? Place your bets…

Here’s the weekly S&P 500 chart:

And last week’s changes:

S&P 5003,841+1.94%
Nasdaq13,543+4.19%
Russell 20002,168+2.15%
Dow Jones30,997+0.59%

Foreign Direct Investment

The United Nations released its latest Investment Trends report earlier today. Global foreign direct investment (FDI) fell 42% in 2020 as result of the coronavirus pandemic.

China actually increased its FDI in 2020. The Asian nation was the world’s top destination for new foreign direct investment last year.

The United States struggled. US FDI dropped 49% as wholesale trade, financial services, and manufacturing felt the pressure.

Here’s a chart with FDI inflows by region.

And the changes in 2020 FDI inflows for select economies.

The outlook for 2021 remains weak but technology and healthcare could continue to carry on. The UN said:

These two industries are not affected by the pandemic in the same way as other industrial sectors. Although their investment actuality slowed down initially in 2020 they are now set to take advantage of low interest rates and increasing market values to acquire assets in overseas markets for expansion, as well as rivals and smaller innovative companies affected by the crisis.

Get Off The Grid!

What good is the grid when you can live like this?

First-time architect Prashant Ashoka designed the sustainable structure to be “birthed from the mountainside itself.” Solar panels and rainwater power the peaceful palace.

Ashoka said:

While there is nothing new about the concept of mirrored buildings, Casa Etérea does something different by putting sustainability first.

I hold self-sustaining architecture in high reverence, especially in our time of climate crisis, and believe that off-grid homes represent our ultimate integration with the environment…

I wanted this interplay of light and scale to evoke a deep sense of awe for the wild and to beg questions about our role as stewards in the preservation of our ecosystems

The cabin was built with local materials near San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Here’s Dezeen with more.
